![]() Since hail can cause the rainfall estimates to be higher than what is actually occurring, steps are taken to prevent these high dBZ values from being converted to rainfall. Hail is a good reflector of energy and will return very high dBZ values. These values are estimates of the rainfall per hour, updated each volume scan, with rainfall accumulated over time. ![]() Depending on the type of weather occurring and the area of the U.S., forecasters use a set of rainrates which are associated to the dBZ values. Multnomah County will fund 418,000 for two district attorneys. The higher the dBZ, the stronger the rainrate. The City of Portland will fund 370,000 for two deputy district attorney investigators and one legal assistant. Typically, light rain is occurring when the dBZ value reaches 20. The scale of dBZ values is also related to the intensity of rainfall. The value of the dBZ depends upon the mode the radar is in at the time the image was created. Notice the color on each scale remains the same in both operational modes, only the values change. The other scale (near left) represents dBZ values when the radar is in precipitation mode (dBZ values from 5 to 75). ![]() Check out our current live radar and weather forecasts for Portland. One scale (far left) represents dBZ values when the radar is in clear air mode (dBZ values from -28 to +28). Portland Oregon Weather Radar LoginAsk is here to help you access Portland Oregon. So, expect changeable weather from hour to hour through Wednesday as waves of showers move onshore and spread through the region. Each reflectivity image you see includes one of two color scales. This weather pattern continues for two more days. The dBZ values increase as the strength of the signal returned to the radar increases. So, a more convenient number for calculations and comparison, a decibel (or logarithmic) scale (dBZ), is used. See a real view of Earth from space, providing a detailed view of clouds, weather systems, smoke, dust, and fog Wind. Reflectivity (designated by the letter Z) covers a wide range of signals (from very weak to very strong). Portland thunderstorm chance holds on through early Thursday mostly cloudy afternoon Rosemarie Stein Portland sees a mix of clouds, sun, mild temps Wednesday high 72 Wednesday will be the. "Reflectivity" is the amount of transmitted power returned to the radar receiver. See for a more extensive discussion. The colors are the different echo intensities (reflectivity) measured in dBZ (decibels of Z) during each elevation scan. Weather radars can also pick up returns from nearby objects on the ground (ground clutter) and flying insects. So, rain will occur in some places (such as the western side of the Olympic Mountains) without it showing up on our loop. The beam can be blocked by mountains, and some areas are simply too far away from any radar. The coverage of the Pacific Northwest by weather radar is by no means uniform. ![]() Our loop shows the signals recorded by several radars in the northwest over the last several hours. High values of dbz (color scale to the right of the image) indicate large drops and heavy precipitation. Raindrops and snow produce reflections that become stronger as the size of the drop or flake increases. Weather radars send out pulses of microwave energy and listen between the transmitted pulses for part of that the energy to be reflected back to the radar.
